One very appealing aspect of the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University is the breadth of courses and other requirements you must fulfill before graduation. Included in this wide breadth is the requirement for each Whitman student to successfully complete one or more internships before they graduate.
Last summer, I worked as a corporate merchandising intern at a large clothing and home furnishings retailer. Throughout the experience, I learned a tremendous amount about the retail industry, the structure and strategy of the company, and how the buying process works. I even had the chance to travel to NYC and Atlanta with the company to visit vendors and participate in negotiations. While I enjoyed every minute of it and value the experience I gained there, I want to try something a bit different next summer to gauge my interest in other areas of business like sales and marketing.
For a little over a month now, I have invested countless hours into the search for a new internship. Luckily for me, the Whitman School has its own in-house career center to support students every step of the way. With the help of the career center, I have been able to rehearse interviews with local alumni, perfect my resume with a professional staff, and land interviews with companies I want to work for. Many top companies post their internship openings on a SU-specific online portal (called Orangelink), which our students have exclusive access to when it comes to searching for opportunities. Since Whitman has extensive partnerships with companies looking to hire our students, I have been able to network with corporate recruiters right in our building, and even interview with them on campus too. This culmination of services has undoubtedly helped me in my career at Whitman.
